French lily with WR - Accompanying textIn the night there appeared to the herdsmen in the field an angel who brought them the tidings of the birth of Christ. The herdsmen and their beasts, scattering in terror at this apparition, are tiny figures in the grandly conceived landscape. The light in the sky and in the foreground and the surrounding gloom of the night produce a dramatic contrast.
