the letter "d" in mirror image - Accompanying textThe circumcision scene is set in the stable – the setting described in the Apocrypha. A close network of hatching covers the area on the right with the onlookers, so that it forms a contrast with the light middle section and counterbalances the oblique lines of the ladder on the left.
