An angel came to Joseph in a dream and warned him that Herod intended to kill the infant Jesus. The same night Joseph and Mary fled into Egypt, taking the child with them (Matthew 2:13-15). This etching is a reworking by Rembrandt of a plate of Tobias and the Angel by Hercules Seghers. He replaced Seghers' figures with the holy family and a group of trees.
